The Challenge
We have an under-achieving learning district with a tradition of low expectations for academic and vocational achievement. We must work to improve expectations, opportunities, participation and achievement.

Priorities

  • Increasing access to learning in early years.

  • Raise attainment levels for under 16 year olds.

  • Promote the benefits of learning and increase the number of young people in education, employment or training.

  • Support the development of the 14 - 19 year old school curriculum to broaden the range of opportunities available for young people.

  • Make learning accessible and inclusive to residents aged 16+.

  • Raise the qualifications of the adult population.

  • Raise adult basic skills levels.

  • Address skills shortages for 16 - 25 year olds to support economic development through Work based Learning and workforce development.

  • Raise aspirations and improve progression to Higher Education.
